Financial Support for Canadians During the COVID-19 Pandemic

 

All across the world, governments are scrambling to deal with the fallout of COVID-19. It is no different in Canada. Every day the Prime Minister, Premiers, and Public Health officials across the country are giving daily press briefings announcing financial support and aid to offset the economic impact on Canadians.  It is a lot of confusing information coming at Canadians very quickly and can be difficult to navigate. Here at the NIA, we want to make it easier for you to get to the information you need. Below is a breakdown of all federal benefits available and links to all provincial government websites where financial aid is posted. It is important to check government websites often as information is updated when new changes are announced.

In March, the federal government adopted an emergency plan, Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan. The details of this plan can be accessed by clicking the button below; the changes are also outlined below.


Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan

For older Canadians: Reduced minimum withdrawals for Registered Retirement Income Funds

Reduced the required minimum withdrawals from Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs) by 25% for 2020.

For older Canadians: Delivery of items and personal outreach

Through United Way, older adults can access the delivery of groceries, medications or other needed items, or assistance with connection to community supports. Access service here.

Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

Families will receive an extra $300 through the Canada Child Benefit. No application necessary.

Special goods and tax credit payment

A one-time special payment starting April 9 of approximately $400 for single individuals and $600 for couples. No application necessary.

Extra time to file income tax returns

Filing due date deferred to June 1, 2020. Any new income tax balances due, or installments deferred to August 31, 2020. 

Mortgage support

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHA) has information on how to get mortgage support here. Contact your financial institution to discuss your personal options.

Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB)

A taxable benefit of up to $2000 a month for up to 4 months to eligible workers who have lost their income due to COVID-19. This includes people who are in quarantine or directed self-isolation.  Apply here.

Employment Insurance (EI)

Employment Insurance Benefits are available if you have lost your job through no fault of your own and qualify. The medical certificate requirement has been waived for people who are sick, in quarantine or directed self-isolation. Apply here.

Moratorium on repayment of Canada student loans

A six-month interest free moratorium on repayment of Canada Student loans.
