The First 100 Years of Old Age Security

As Canada marks 100 years since the introduction of it’s first old age pension, a new report from the National Institute on Ageing (NIA), titled The First Hundred Years of Old Age Security, explores the evolution of Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), highlighting their contributions to reducing poverty and providing retirement income security for older Canadians.

As Canada’s population ages and the number of OAS beneficiaries continues to grow, the report underscores the importance of understanding how different components of the retirement income system work together to support the financial security of older Canadians.

Building on this historical analysis, a companion policy brief, The Next 100 Years of Old Age Security: Policy Considerations, explores potential policy changes and their implications for Canada’s retirement system, offering considerations for the years ahead.
