As Canada’s population ages, older Canadians are facing challenges that need our collective attention. There is currently no guiding strategy or framework at the federal level to coordinate government actions and priorities with respect to ageing.

Older adults in Canada deserve cohesive policies that make a real difference in their daily lives. It is essential to ensure the voices of older Canadians are meaningfully included in policy decisions and that their diverse needs are effectively addressed.

Meeting These Challenges

Our goal is to create a Canadian Ageing Action Plan that brings together the voices of older Canadians and the people who support them, to create solutions that truly reflect their needs.

We invite you to join the conversation. Sign up to learn more about the project, discover how you can get involved, and share your ideas with us.

  • National Survey: We’ll begin by reaching out to over 6,000 older Canadians to understand their top priorities. This survey will provide a broad picture of what matters most to them, giving us a strong foundation for further work.
  • Town Halls: In-person discussions with older Canadians will allow us to dive deeper into the issues, ensuring that we capture the full range of experiences and ideas.
  • Sector Partner Consultations: We’ll engage with other ageing-focused organizations to ensure that the advocacy priorities align with what is feasible and relevant within the existing systems.
  • Policy Expert Interviews: We will consult with policy experts to ensure that the recommendations are realistic, actionable, and appropriate for implementation.

The end result will be a clear, unified action plan that outlines the key policy priorities for supporting older Canadians. This action plan will provide practical recommendations for government, helping policy makers make informed, evidence-based decisions. The action plan will also act as a tool to help coordinate efforts across organizations in the ageing sector.

In 2015, national partners came together to launch the first National Seniors Strategy. In 2020, the NIA and partners launched an updated version of the National Seniors Strategy. Since then, the federal, provincial and territorial governments have made progress on several of the recommendations of the National Senior Strategy, but gaps remain. The federal government still has no national strategy to address the needs of older adults, underscoring the importance of developing a new action plan for ageing in Canada.

  • Creating this evidence-based action plan for government requires collaboration, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Whether you are an older adult with lived experience, an advocate, a policy expert, or an organization working in the ageing sector, your input will be essential in shaping the direction of this project.
  • This is your chance to shape policy, influence government decisions, and ensure older Canadians are heard. Join us in building a unified approach that drives real, lasting change.
