Dr. Matthew Downer

Dr. Matthew Downer is a resident physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Toronto. His research interests include in healthy aging, geriatric medicine, and rehabilitation. He previously completed a BSc(Hons) and MD at Memorial University of Newfoundland, where his research focused on improving rehabilitation and promoting healthy aging in older adults living with neurological diseases. He also completed an MSc in Epidemiology and a DPhil (PhD) in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. His doctorate focused on various outcomes in older adults with cerebrovascular disease. He has also been involved in a range of health policy and advocacy initiatives at the provincial and federal level. With the NIA, Dr. Downer previously lead a report outlining how the Opioid Crisis affects older Canadians, and he was the Data and Policy Lead for the NIA’s MyCOVIDVisitRisk Webpage. His current research at the NIA focuses on intersections between technology and ageing.
