20% of older Canadians ‘experiencing material deprivation’: Survey

According to the 2025 Ageing in Canada Survey, a report published by the National Institute on Ageing at Toronto Metropolitan University, 20% Canadians aged 50 and older said they were “experiencing a poverty-level standard of living,” while 18% said they couldn’t afford an unexpected expense of $500.

The annual survey examined responses from 6,001 Canadians aged 50 and older covering three key areas: social wellbeing, financial security, health and independence.

Respondents struggling financially reported “experiencing material deprivation,” meaning they can’t afford essential goods and services.

“Those most likely to be experiencing material deprivation include women, those aged 50 to 64, those in poor health status and renters,” the report said.
